coldcrashpictures

By Ava Fineza

Time travel back like three years ago, I watched this video from coldcrashpictures about sexist tropes in cinema. I always liked it, but at the time I had not seen many films and couldn’t really watch more. Good thing I always had ~taste~ because here I am talking to you about yet another awesome channel for video essays.

Trope Anatomy hasn’t posted anything in five(5) months, ok??

coldcrashpictures is a channel with vlogs about cinema, pop culture, and other types of entertainment wrapped in some really great editing and dialogue. There’s even a film on his channel called Second Service which I should really get to watching instead of Clone High lmao. What I like most about Serge’s (his name) videos is that they are so well researched and very self aware, and I always leave knowing something new. Cold Crash has a very extensive knowledge of film and his videos put a spotlight on small things I have thought about cinema but never translated into full fledged “takes.” You know, for when people ask me for my opinions on Hollywood. Videos like his ones on sexist tropes in cinema, his favorite feminist tropes in cinema, his favorite relationships in cinema - these videos have opened the door for me to a lot of appealing films (The Birdcage, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Ball of Fire). Other videos of his focus on stuff I already like, such as the film Birds of Prey and musicals™. With the detail Serge puts into his videos I am able to enjoy the films I like even more as a result - or fuel the fire for sexist tropes that I already hated ;). One of my favorite videos of his is this one:

So, I’ve never actually seen Jurassic Park, and I didn’t really want to because I saw how the trailers for the new ones looked (stupid) and assumed it was basically the same. Lots of overly macho guys saving helpless women, just a true lack of plot and realistic characterization… Anyways, all of that changed when I watched Cold Crash’s video, and I learned some interesting things about gender in that video, as well as how much of a badass Ellie Satler actually is. Now I actually want to watch the movie! Thanks Serge!

He has a new video coming out soon (I think) - part two of Saurian Cinema! Which is good, because he seems to know a lot about dinosaur films and I know very little, so this series will definitely be enjoyable. coldcrashpictures mixes really fresh ideas on media with interesting topics, and is one of the only youtube channels I constantly check for more from. I’ve become genuinely excited to see what Serge has in store in terms of his channel and his career, and his definitely deserves your views.

Here’s the channel, and here are some other videos from the channel I enjoy:
