Logan Lucky
By Ava Fineza
logline - Two brothers attempt to end a family streak of unluckiness with a heist on a big NASCAR race.
I had no expectations going into this movie, but I was drawn in by Adam Driver and Daniel Craig’s Southern Accent (which was hilarious, and I see you Knives Out). Not only that, but look, there’s Jack Quaid from The Boys! And Sebastian Stan from those superhero movies! And Katherine Waterson from Fantastic Beasts? Honestly this cast fully shocked me, because there were so many people I enjoy watching but would never imagine together in one movie. The casting was one of the reasons why I enjoyed this movie so much as it added to the absurdity of the situation. I’m glad I went in with no expectations, because I had so much fun with Logan Lucky. It was extremely funny, very odd(though that could be why it was so funny), and the movie was fast paced and had me hooked from beginning to end. Logan Lucky is a heist film, but without all of the elegance and glamour other heist movies try to emulate(Now You See Me, ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). It’s not always bad but this theme can get irritating, like the writers were just trying to psyche us out instead of entertain us. Logan Lucky in contrast is very humble, not over-the-top, and it’s ending is much more satisfying than annoying. As for the characters, this film provides an ensemble from a setting I had never seen before in a movie, which is North Carolina(have you ever seen a movie that takes place in North Carolina?). People talked and acted differently than how they do here in California, specifically LA, and everyone was eccentric in the best way possible. Logan Lucky is extremely charming, hilarious, and a great movie to watch to lift your spirits any day.
Fun Fact - Riley Keough, who plays Mellie Logan, is the granddaughter of Elvis Presley. Another fun fact - this movie is Channing Tatum’s fourth collaboration with Steven Soderburgh.
My Favorite Characters
Adam Driver as Clyde Logan - I am definitely extremely biased because it’s Adam Driver, but I really like Clyde’s character in this film. His relationship with his brother Jimmy is hilarious, and even though they aren’t the brightest Clyde has his moments where he shines - like this scene where he makes a margarita with one hand). Clyde is the quieter one of the bunch and goes along with his brother even when it gets him into trouble, and watching him on screen was always awkward and funny.
Riley Keough as Mellie Logan - Mellie is definitely the coolest member of the Logan family. I love how badass she is, and I loved watching Millie interact with Sadie (Jimmy’s daughter) and act as a second mother to her, and it was even more fun to see her upstage the new stepdad (Moody Chapman, apparently) every time they were on screen together. Like the rest of her family, Mellie’s a little weird too, and that what I love about her. Best getaway driver ever.
Rated PG-13 for some language and crude comments.
