Crazy Rich Asians. I personally LOVE this movie, but it is not without its issues. A lot of what makes this movie really interesting to the public was the fact that it had an Asian-based storyline and an all Asian cast, which is really rare for a Hollywood produced movie.

Some people would say that this movie exploited the use of the Asian culture, and they’re not wrong. But it was done to provide a different perspective of Asians in a way that was light and easy to watch. And for this, Crazy Rich Asians is an important film. That said, while I think it’s really wonderful for Hollywood to start giving more attention to Asian-based stories and actors, the story in and of itself wasn’t all that. It stayed kind of true to the book, but as always with book-to-movie adaptations, there were details and scenes cut that would have added a lot more to the overall storyline and character development. From a visual perspective, the movie is extremely pleasing to the eye. The architecture of Singapore is beautiful, and the fashion pieces were stunning. Crazy Rich Asians is a great movie if you don’t focus too hard on the story, and a fun watch if you just want something you can fall asleep to.

logline: When Rachel Chu’s boyfriend asks her to spend the summer with him and his family in Singapore, she realizes that she knows next to nothing about them. When they touch down in Singapore, Rachel is plunged into a world where everyone is rich - crazy rich.

My Favorite Characters:

  • Gemma Chan as Astrid Young Teo - style queen! gemma chan is honestly just iconic and i love her. astrid is 1000% the cool cousin that you need to show up to the family party.

  • Henry Golding as Nick Young - firstly, his face, for obvious reasons. secondly, he was so adorable throughout the entire movie. he’s like the dream boyfriend that everybody wants.

This movie is rated PG-13. Here’s why:

  • Suggestive Content

  • Language

Something I liked: The FREAKING wedding scene. The first time I watched it, I actually cried because it was so breathtakingly beautiful. The lights in the aisles mixed with the flowers and WATER??? No idea why that would ever be a thing, but I love it. I think this scene is a favorite for many people that watched this movie, and even if you aren’t planning to watch the full film, you should definitely watch this scene.

Where to Watch:

  • Hulu (with Cinemax Extension)

  • HBO and HBOMax

  • Google Play Store, Apple, YouTube, Amazon Prime, and Vudu for rent or purchase
