I don’t normally go out looking for romance movies, I just watch a comedy or action film and most of the time there happens to be a fun relationship that you can walk away with. But I watched Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and it totally changed my view on romance films, so maybe I’ll have to start watching more. This film was really amazing and so insightful, I think it might be one of the greatest love stories ever made. When I first heard about Eternal Sunshine I certainly wasn’t expecting science-fiction, nor was I expecting the crazy special effects and production (@every dream scene, wow). Suffice to say, I was full blown away by the visual aspect of this movie. Of course, the story itself is the best part (spoilers ahead). Clementine and Joel’s relationship felt so real and intimate, and the message of trying again knowing it might end hit so hard I felt a headache coming on. Their story and the way it was told with Joel running through his bad memories and their rough past to get to her is something very breathtaking, and Eternal Sunshine is one of those movies that restores your faith in love or makes you think wow, maybe life is worth it if I can get that. The film is so real, everything feels real, Clementine and Joel feel more like people than characters and the plot feels more like a story to be passed on to grandchildren than something that was typed out and written. What I like most is the ambiguous ending to Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in which it isn’t clear whether Joel and Clementine will be together, forever and ever. The two might split apart and they know that, but there’s some pull that is so strong that they’re willing to try again. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind has become one of my favorite movies and probably my favorite romance movie, and I highly recommend it to anyone and everyone.

my favorite characters:

  • Jim Carrey as Joel Barish and Kate Winslet as Clementine Kruczynski - I thought I might as well put these two together to show how beautifully this was casted. These two actors did incredible and had such great chemistry together it's crazy; they were robbed of awards. My favorite Joel line: “Why do I fall in love with every woman I see that shows me the least bit of attention?” and my favorite Clementine line: “I don't need nice. I don't need myself to be it, and I don't need anybody else to be it at me.” The amount of times this movie has attacked me with one liners is scary.

this movie is rated R. here’s why:

  • Language

  • Drug Use

  • Sexual Content

fun fact: Almost all of the visual tricks seen in the movie are special effects - only two scenes utilize CGI.
