Bodyguard

Not to be confused with the Whitney Houston movie. This is a superb British drama, which seems to be all I am watching during quarantine. This show kept me on the edge of my seat. The pilot starts out in a situation where any other drama would end, and that already puts you off balance. This show is beautifully shot, acted, written, and edited. Every episode has a new revelation that keeps your eyes glued to whatever device you are watching it on. It helps that Richard Madden is easy on the eyes too.

logline: War veteran David Budd finds work as a police sergeant with London's Metropolitan Police Service, in the Royalty and Specialist Protection branch. He is assigned to protect the home secretary, the Rt. Hon. Julia Montague MP, a controversial and ambitious politician who is described as "the sociopath" by one of her aides, and who has plans to introduce invasive new surveillance powers for security forces. Finding himself increasingly at odds with Montague's policies and personality, and dealing with physical and psychological scars from his time serving in Afghanistan, volatile Budd is torn between his beliefs and his duty to protect.

My Favorite Character:

  • Richard Madden as David Budd: a complex character torn between beliefs and his duty. It gets even more complicated as a relationship starts to blossom between him and his MP. His character goes through so many trials and tribulations and you want him desperately to be okay. From PTSD to a separation with his wife, Budd goes through so much and Madden plays it with realism and intensity. His performance is the crown jewel of this amazing show.

Something I Liked: Since Richard Madden is Scottish, he pronounces words differently than everybody else. His most iconic instance of this in the show is his pronunciation of “ma’am.” He pronounces it “mum.” Much to the enjoyment of everyone watching.

Fun Fact: Bodyguard was the most watched drama on the UK’s BBC since 2008 with an average of 10.4 million viewers for each episode.
