I watched this entire show the day after it came on Hulu. If you saw my Instagram story that day, you can attest to that. It was gripping and I could not look away. In 12 episodes, you went on a journey through an entire relationship, an honest and absorbing love story. It had ups and downs and very carefully crafted dialogue. The two lead actors are so believable as Connell and Marianne that you feel you’ve known them forever. Or at least since high school. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll genuinely have restored faith in humanity. The acting on this show is top-notch, from two actors to watch out for. Both give wonderful and layered performances. This show also has been praised for its realistic portrayal of sex on television.

logline: Normal People follows Marianne and Connell, from different backgrounds but the same small town in Ireland, as they weave in and out of each other's romantic lives.

My Favorite Characters:

  • Paul Mescal as Connell Waldron: Paul Mescal is my new obsession and no one can stop me. Connell is a well-liked, academically gifted student. His character struggles with anxiety and depression throughout the show in one of the most realistic portrayals out there. You feel for him and you just want him to be happy. Paul Mescal’s performance is beautifully intricate and he has great chemistry with Edgar-Jones.

  • Daisy Edgar-Jones as Marianne Sheridan: Edgar-Jones gives an equally beautiful portrayal as Marianne who has had many of her own struggles in life. Her character is a student from an affluent family who is studious, outspoken, and therefore disliked. She is a wonderfully complicated and flawed person who we can all relate to. She gives a very human look at Marianne as a person with her own issues and is completely separate from Connell, even when they are together.

Fun Fact: Connell’s chain has a fan following. Throughout the story, Connell wears a small chain around his neck that has probably gained more traction than the show itself. But, I mean. Have you seen the chain?
