who doesn’t love a good fantasy show? shadow and bone is arguably one of the most highly anticipated netflix series of 2021 (at least, so far). with a very large fanbase created by the absolute GENIUS that is the 5 books that make up the Grishaverse, we all knew that it would not be any easy feat to do the source material justice. i did read both shadow and bone + six of crows before watching the show so i could do some mental comparisons between the books and the series, knowing that the storyline wouldn’t be EXACTLY the same. however, i went into the show thinking the storyline would be a 50/50 split between shadow and bone and six of crows, but i unfortunately was very, VERY incorrect about this. (f in the chat for my six of crows stans). it was more like a 80/20 split, with 70% being shadow and bone and 30% being six of crows. nevertheless, the show was amazing! it stayed true to the books, but also made changes that were noticeable, but not annoying or uncalled for. the writers also did a great job, making sure that the script had some of those key lines from the books, but also making sure that the show didn’t fall to the curse that is cringe netflix dialogue, which we see far too often. seeing alina’s and general kirigan’s powers brought to life was also incredible. in fact, the whole damn show was beautiful, even the fold. for fans of the Grishaverse and newcomers to the series, i can tell that this show is gonna be a hit. make sure you go watch it when it comes out this friday, april 23rd! no mourners, no funerals.

my favorite characters:

  • Kit Young as Jesper Fahey - hey bestie. jesper was my favorite character in the Six of Crows duology, and that was consistent while watching the show as well. the classic “sassy gunslinger”, jesper is super likeable, even though he’s not really a “main character”, persay. he wasn’t one-dimensonal, and i think that Kit Young did a really great job bringing the playfulness we all love in jesper to the screen.

  • Jessie Mei Li as Alina Starkov - of course i have to give major major props to the lovely leading lady of the series. Jessie was incredible as alina, playing her moments of strength and vulnerability just right. she’s still a fairly new actress on the scene, but i have a feeling that we’re just seeing the beginning of a great career ahead of her.

this series is rated TV-MA. here’s why:

  • violence

number of seasons: season 1 comes out on netflix in two days, april 23rd! mark your calendars!
