grown-ish

The thing I really like about grown-ish is the way it tackles real-life issues in a realistic way. Each character has a certain issue that they face while taking on the challenges of being a college student. I like the fact that it’s also centered around the younger generations, discussing things like social media and late-night booty calls. Even though I do enjoy the show, sometimes I feel like the amount of money that all the characters seem to have is quite unrealistic. The show is a fun watch, but there are still occasional cringy moments. That being said, this is probably due to the fact that freeform is a disney-owned platform, and it’s got some of that classic disney character behavior. However, it has content that could be considered edgy for disney, and I think that’s important. Overall, I believe that grown-ish a good show with funny moments, touching moments, and moments with good advice.

logline: In this black-ish spinoff, college freshman Zoey Johnson is excited to start her own life outside of her hometown. Along with her new group of friends, she must face the growing pains that come with adulthood and navigate her new responsibilities while maintaining the high social status she has grown used to.

My favorite characters:

  • Emily Arlook as Nomi Segal - nomi is the cool badass friend we want to have. she’s sassy, super funny and her sexuality is something that isn’t forced, something other shows struggle with.

  • Halle Bailey as Sky Forster - i love both of the forster twins, but i think sky pulls up on top. she’s sweet, hilarious, and also has some of the best one-liners in the show.

  • Jordan Buhat as Vivek Shah - he’s such a idiot, but so adorable. also, for some reason he seems to be the only secondary character that gets absolutely NO screentime. #justiceforvivek
