House M.D.

Who knew that a medical show loosely based on Sherlock Holmes (Homes-House, get it?) would work so well? Well, apparently David Shore did. This, on the surface, may seem like the basic medical drama with high stakes patients every week. Well, it is. But the main character is a drug-obsessed, cane wielding infectious disease specialist. It’s not like the show doesn’t fall into the occasional trope, such as finding the cure in the middle of a conversation of a completely unrelated nature. But this show updates them with interesting characters and plot lines that almost make you forget how random and convoluted some of the episodes are. The writing is clever and quippy, the acting is wonderful, the directing is hyper-realistic (i never thought I’d see intestines so many times), and the overall show is amazing. You should give it a watch.

logline: An antisocial maverick doctor who specializes in diagnostic medicine does whatever it takes to solve puzzling cases that come his way using his crack team of doctors and his wits.

My Favorite Characters:

  • Hugh Laurie as Dr. Gregory House: he’s so good, you wouldn’t even know that he’s British. House will make 10 wrong diagnoses and then finally come across the right one in a mundane situation. He is a pretentious misanthrope who became a doctor to treat illnesses and finds that patients are what makes most doctors miserable. Hugh Laurie plays him with humanity and with enough sarcasm to fill a prescription of Vicodin, which he will down multiple times every episode.

  • Lisa Edelstein as Dr. Lisa Cuddy: she is the Dean Of Medicine at the hospital and is House’s boss, whom he so often resents. She is the perfect person for House to intellectually spar with, and they do so quite often. Cuddy has a complex relationship with House throughout the series and along with Wilson, serves as his only companions. Cuddy is smart and capable and doesn’t rely on anyone but herself which makes her the coolest character and the one who I strive to be.

  • Robert Sean Leonard as Dr. James Wilson: House’s right hand man and his only friend. Wilson is the complete antithesis to House, kind-hearted and came into medicine to help people. He is the head of the Oncology Department which only makes it more depressing when he succumbs to...well I don’t want to spoil it. Wilson is the only person that could be House’s best friend because he pushes House to be better.

This show is rated TV-14. Here’s why:

  • Sexual Innuendos and References

  • Moderate Violence

  • Language

  • Use of Alcohol and Drugs

  • Frightening and Intense Scenes

Something I Liked: I adore the rotating door of interns and residents on the show. Every new batch of residents seem to parallel the prior group. Usually two men and one woman. In the first batch, there is Eric Foreman, Robert Chase, and Allison Cameron. See the two men and one woman. The second batch includes Chris Taub, Lawrence Kutner, and Remy Hadley. (Again, two men and one woman). But later, more female residents and interns are added such as Martha Masters, Jessica Adams, and Chi Park. Every new member of House’s diagnostic team adds a new layer. Though some might be so similar that you lump them together, you do enjoy all of them.
